Ottawa, June 12, 2019 – The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) welcomed the recommendations put forward in the final report by the Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare. Implementing prescription drug coverage similarly to universal health care will reduce health inequities among Canadians.

“CNA has long advocated for implementing a universal, single-payer, public pharmacare program that is evidence-based. We support the advisory council’s recommendations to build a program that is comprehensive, accessible, portable across the provinces and territories, and publicly funded,” said CNA president Claire Betker.

CNA recognizes that because of its complexity, implementing national pharmacare will require incremental steps. That’s why we are also pleased to see recommendations around the phase-in approach of a national formulary (i.e., a list of prescription drugs that would be covered) and purchasing strategies.

“CNA has been involved in the pharmacare consultation process from the very beginning. We look forward to working with the federal government on strategies to implement pharmacare to ensure no Canadian is left behind,” said Betker.

CNA calls on all levels of government to work together to follow through on the recommendations outlined in the council’s report. The release of the report is a historic moment for Canadians and a recognition that we deserve a national pharmacare program.
